Garmin began selling CIRQA, a screenless fitness band, on 24 July 2026 at $199.99, with sleep, heart rate, Body Battery, Training Readiness, VO2 Max and HRV Status all working without a subscription. That last clause is the whole story: it puts a recurring-fee-free option into a category - the screenless recovery band - that Whoop built and has largely defined.
The hardware is unremarkable on paper and that is rather the point. One physical button, no display, up to 10 days of battery, a 5 ATM water rating so it survives swimming, and Garmin's Elevate Gen 4 optical heart-rate sensor with pulse ox. It comes in two band sizes - S/M for 120-200 mm wrists, L/XL for 145-240 mm - in black, French gray, berry and navy, and it tracks more than 80 activities from the wrist or the phone.
What is free and what is not
Garmin's own framing deserves precision, because "no subscription" is doing a lot of work in the coverage. The tracking that most people buy a band for - **sleep, heart rate, stress, respiration, Body Battery, Training Readiness, Training Status, VO2 Max, HRV Status and Fitness Age** - is included with the device.
Garmin Connect+ still exists as an optional paid tier. It carries Live Activities, Garmin Coach training plans, guided classes, nutrition tracking, Active Intelligence insights and voice-guided meditation. So the honest sentence is not "Garmin has no subscription" - it is that Garmin does not put the recovery metrics behind one.
What this means if you are shopping
Work out the multi-year number before you compare launch prices, because the three main ways to buy a recovery tracker are structurally different, not just differently priced.
- Buy the hardware, own the data. CIRQA at $199.99 once. Nothing further is required to keep seeing your sleep and readiness numbers.
- Buy the hardware, rent the insights. Oura Ring 5 launched 28 May 2026 at $399 for the base finish and $499 for premium ones, plus membership at $5.99 a month or $69.99 a year. Two years of that membership alone is $139.98.
- Rent everything. Whoop bundles the band into the membership, so there is no separate hardware price - and no residual device value if you stop paying.
None of these is automatically the right answer. A subscription that keeps shipping genuinely new analysis can be worth paying. The mistake is comparing a one-time price to a first-year price and calling it a comparison.
What we could not verify
Whoop's current tier prices. Third-party write-ups disagree with each other - we found figures ranging from about $199 to $359 a year depending on tier and billing term - and Whoop's own membership page refused our request. We are not going to print a number we could not read at the source. Check whoop.com directly before you compare.
Real-world battery life. "Up to 10 days" is a manufacturer figure, measured under manufacturer conditions. Continuous pulse ox and frequent syncing shorten it on every device that offers them, and by how much on this one is not yet established.
Accuracy against a chest strap. CIRQA is too new for independent testing to have accumulated. Optical wrist heart rate is reliably weaker than a chest strap during high-intensity intervals, and there is no reason yet to assume this sensor is an exception.

Does CIRQA have a screen?
No. It is deliberately screenless, with a single physical button. You read your data in the Garmin Connect app.
How long does the battery last?
Garmin quotes up to 10 days. Treat that as a ceiling rather than a daily expectation, particularly if you leave pulse ox running overnight.
Is it waterproof?
It carries a 5 ATM rating, which covers swimming. That is a pressure rating, not a licence for scuba diving.
Should I switch from my Whoop or Oura?
Only after you price the next three years of each, and only if the metrics you actually open the app for are on the free side of the line. If you rely on coaching plans or guided content, the subscription question does not go away - it just moves.
